Printing Barcode Labels

While we have a label printing utility that can generate barcodes in various sizes on laser or inkjet printers, having a dedicated barcode label printer is advantageous because it enables you to print one or more labels simultaneously without any waste. Furthermore, their label printing software provides significantly more functionality. Our label printing utility can also operate alongside their software.

Thermal Transfer Printer

We recommend the Zebra ZD411T TT Printer [203dpi]. It is fairly inexpensive and is a Thermal Transfer printer.  We will outline below the difference between a Direct Thermal Printer and a Thermal Transfer Printer.

Barcode Factory sells these. Here is the link: https://www.barcodefactory.com/zebra/printers/zd411/zd4a022-t01m00ez

The difference between Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer barcode label printers lies in how they print and the type of labels they use. Here’s a breakdown:

1. Direct Thermal (DT) Printing

How It Works:

  • Uses heat-sensitive label paper that darkens when heated by the printer’s printhead.
  • No ink, toner, or ribbon required.

Pros:
✔️ No extra supplies needed (lower cost per label).
✔️ Simple & low maintenance (no ribbon to replace).
✔️ Good for short-term labels (shipping, receipts, food labels).

Cons:

  • Labels fade over time, especially when exposed to heat, light, or friction.
  • Not good for long-term or outdoor use.
  • Only prints in black (unless special colored paper is used).

🛠 Best For:
📦 Shipping labels
🍎 Food industry labels (expiration dates)
🎟 Temporary barcode labels

2. Thermal Transfer (TT) Printing

How It Works:

  • Uses a ribbon with ink that gets transferred onto the label using heat.
  • Can print on various materials, including paper, polyester, and vinyl.

Pros:
✔️ Long-lasting labels (resistant to heat, chemicals, and moisture).
✔️ Crisp, high-quality prints (ideal for small barcodes).
✔️ Can print in multiple colors (with different ribbons).

Cons:

  • Requires ribbons (higher cost per label).
  • More maintenance (ribbon changes required).

🛠 Best For:
🏷 Asset labels (inventory, warehouse, and equipment tags)
🏭 Industrial applications (chemical & medical labels)
🌧 Outdoor labels (durable and weather-resistant)

Which One Should You Choose?

  • For short-term labels (shipping, receipts, food)Direct Thermal
  • For long-lasting, durable labels (inventory, industrial use)Thermal Transfer

If you need labels that last more than a few months, Thermal Transfer is the way to go. Otherwise, Direct Thermal is cost-effective for short-term needs.

You’ll also need software. While some software is included with the label printer, the professional software is not free. We can only interface with Zebra Designer Pro 3. This allows us to create small files that are sent to the software so you can print labels from our system, either through the label printing utility or directly from the inventory item. We can certainly show you how that works.

Scanning the barcodes

Our software is scan-ready. This means that most barcode scanners capable of reading UPC or 3 of 9 barcodes will work. They don’t require special software, as they simply interpret the barcode characters, type them onto the screen, and then press Enter.

We like the NuScan because it’s affordable, wireless, and cordless. It’s not wireless like Wi-Fi, so it doesn’t require setup; you simply use it.

Software Add-Ons

DataHealth offers two products that integrate effectively with Digital Wrench.

One of their offerings is cloud backup. While we have a built-in file backup program that allows you to save your data to any external device, the DataHealth backup is what they refer to as an image backup. This means that data can be backed up while the program is still running. Additionally, it is stored in the cloud, so if your computer fails, gets malware or a virus, or is even stolen, your data remains securely stored in their systems.

The other item is online hosting. They set up an online Windows server for you to run Digital Wrench in the cloud. While an internet connection is necessary, you can access it from any location with a connection and a computer. This is particularly beneficial for mobile businesses.

Accept Payments Easily and Affordably

Digital Wrench integrates with Clearent by displaying the payment amount on the terminal screen. After you process the card, you will see an accept or deny option. If accepted, the allowable payment information is stored in Digital Wrench.

Submit an inquiry for a no-risk price analysis (approved merchants receive a free payments terminal)
